Rolex is just about ‘the name’ in watches. You can tell by how many replicas and knock offs you come across. Everyone and anyone wants a Rolex watch. You can certainly buy a replica but, an authentic Rolex is much harder, and more expensive to come by.

Chances are you have heard of Rolex which is a trademarked name which Hans Wilsdorf created in the 1900’s. The original name for the company was actually in the founder’s name which was “Wilsdorf & Davis”.

It is not clear how Rolex watches got their however, there is speculation that the word means” movement.” There is another story that it is a French name which means exquisite watch industry. Questions still remain as to the origins of Rolex as the brand name.

Regardless, the name is officially recognized, and Rolex watches are certainly known for quality and craftsmanship. The name was changed to increase the popularity of the watch.

During that time, pocket watches were the rage, and Wilsdorf wanted to change the name to promote Rolex watches. The name was shorter and was easier to pronounce, and the change did turn out to be effective.

By the 1900’s, the name of the company was officially changed to Rolex Watch Company. It is now known throughout the world as Rolex.

But Rolex watches are more than a name and they certainly had to earn and prove their name. They did so successfully. At the time, Rolex watches were innovative and their popularity has sustained throughout the years.

The first waterproof watch was a Rolex. They were the first watch to state the date on them. The first two time zone watches were Rolex watches. They were also the first of the self winding watches. which was run by and internal mechanism, based on movement’s of a person’s arm. This eliminated the problem with over-winding, and winding watches became obsolete.

Rolex were the first watchmakers to earn a certification for chronometer. They still hold the record for most chronometer movements.

Rolex has also played an important role in the origination of quartz watch movements. The engineers, were the first to implement and design quartz movement technology.

Rolex holds a reputation of being very durable and long lasting. They can handle just about any adverse conditions. It has been tested on deep-sea diving, to climbing steep mountains, to aviation and more. Rolex watches are the infamous survivors.

Today, Rolex watches are known as status symbols, even though there are more expensive watches on the market.
